‘Having to Miss Out on World Cup Obviously Dampened The Mood’: Shubman Gill – News18

Young India batting sensation Shubman Gill opened up on his phenomenal 2023 with the bat but suggested that the loss in the 2023 ODI World Cup final dampened his mood. Shubman has been the leading run-scorer in ODI this year with 1584 runs in 29 matches at an astonishing average of 63.36 which includes five centuries.

The talented batter has become a pivotal part of the Indian cricket team set-up across formats and has shown good consistency with his performances.

Shubman suggested that missing out on the ODI WC trophy dampened his mood but will look to make it up in next year’s T20 World Cup.

“I think it’s been a great year for me but having to miss out on the World Cup obviously dampened the mood a bit, but fortunately, we have another World Cup coming up next year so we are all looking forward to it,” Shubman told CNBC-TV 18.

The 24-year-old said the that Test series against South Africa and next year’s Border-Gavaskar Trophy are the two series he is very much looking forward to.

“In the next one year, there is the World Cup coming, a very important Test series coming up in Australia, and I think this year is not over yet, we have the Test series, coming up in South Africa as well. I think the Test series in Australia and the South Africa series are going to be really big ones and those are the matches I am really looking forward to,” he added.

The young batter also talked about leading an IPL team for the first time next year as he has been appointed Gujarat Titans skipper after Hardik Pandya was traded to Mumbai Indians.

“I am going to be captaining Gujarat Titans, that is a very exciting challenge and that’s gonna be a lot of learning, from that experience hopefully, I can take those learnings and improve myself based on those experiences and learnings, and only that is going to help me in the next year,” he said.

Shubman was diagnosed with dengue in October and missed the initial two matches of the World Cup as he also said during the tournament that he had lost the muscle mass.

The ICC number 1 ranked ODI batter further revealed the details of his recovery and said he will be back to his best during the T20I series against South Africa.

“I am still gaining, you know. I have been working in the gym for about two-three hours every day for the past 8-9 days. There is still a good eight days before we start the T20 series in South Africa, so hopefully by the time we start, I will be back to my best,” Shubman said.
