Here Are All The Key Parts Of Destiny 2’s 2023 State Of The Game

Destiny director Joe Blackburn just dropped a massive State of the Game post, now a yearly tradition again after taking some time off. While it is not revealing as much info as the upcoming Final Shape+beyond showcase will in a few weeks, there’s a lot here to parse.

You are free to read all 6,500 words, but I wanted to bullet point out all the major takeaways here. I will expand on my thoughts on them in a video later. There are changes to all aspects of the game, though perhaps in some areas, not as much as people would like. Other things sounds more promising. Here we go:

– There are rarely new Crucible maps because they are putting more work into Exotic missions, seasonal activities and new destinations. Bringing back old maps is a lot more work than it looks

– The new map is a Vex network map called Multiplex, the concept is that it is currently compiling the Infinite Forest, it will appear in the Showcase

– New modes Checkmate, more focused on gunplay and less on abilities through longer cooldowns and with less special ammo, and Relic, where players use past raid/seasonal relics to fight each other, goofy fun like Mayhem or Scorched.

– Vanguard medals are arriving for strikes, taken from the Guardian Games concept. Meant to encourage diversity of play. Higher scoring chances for Nightfalls.

– There is indeed a Gambit section this time, they explain Gambit isn’t popular enough to warrant a ton of investment. They are, however, bringing back the Cathedral of Scars vaulted map, and they’re adding Shadow Legion and Lucent Hive enemies. They are removing Gambit as a must-play weekly activity for exotics and weekly challenges

– They know they promised new ritual armor with every playlist but people didn’t use them much. They are making one for The Final Shape but there will not be one for every expansion. There is a new Trials set coming next season. Here’s the Titan one:

– Game security has a big section. Doing a lot of things here. They are suing a bunch of cheatmakers and have already won a bunch of cases. You are still cheating if you give your account to someone and they cheat.

– They know Destiny stability has been very bad, and they are fixing things in next season and the season after, they’ve gone over this in the past, lots of technical things like “chaos testing” and “auto-recovery.” In short, they’re working on it.

– They are giving themselves “more freedom” narratively and in gameplay in seasons 22 and 23. Not a ton of expansion on this.

– You will be able to pin 100 favorite shaders, ornaments and emotes to the top of their lists.

– Stasis aspects and fragments are moving to the vendor system where you buy them for glimmer. You still need to own and beat the Beyond Light campaign, they are not making Stasis free.

– Transmats are now unlocks like ghost projections. Fun fact I have never used a transmat effect.

– There is a resource tab in Collections that explains what literally every currency in the game does and how to spend it.

– Iron Banner will have pursuits that both do and do not require a specific subclass.

– Ritual rank-ups will now show immediately on your screen when hit, and will instantly give you rewards. Remember uhhh Ascendant Shards no longer go to the Postmaster…

– There are another three Strand aspects coming next season, Whirling Maelstrom (Hunter), Banner of War (Titans) and Weavewalk (Warlocks). No explanations yet.

– More exotic armor is being reworked for next season.

– There are new weapon “subfamilies” coming. Not totally new weapons like glaives, but subfamilies within the existing types.

– More weapon tuning is coming next season which has two goals, reduce variance between mid-range weapons and reduce average engagement range in Crucible. Damage falloff will increase on almost all weapons.

– Next season is heading into “creative territories we’ve never explored before.,” Changes to seasonal progress and an all-new mechanic. This will be discussed at the showcase.

– Narrative team is focused on connecting seasons 20-23 more than last year’s seasons ahead of Lightfall.

– They promise the Light and Dark saga will have an actual, climactic conclusion with The Final Shape. They once again reinforce what’s coming next in “Destiny 2.” A new game is not coming right afterward. They have said this many times but some people haven’t heard it.

– They are once again not raising the power cap in season 22. They think they have increased the challenge of the game with harder GMs. Nothing about the alleged power level large-scale rework that’s rumored to be coming. At this point, who knows, maybe it’s been pushed until after Final Shape or even saved for the next expansion.

– There is a new system called “Pathfinder” that will replace ritual bounties which they think is more rewarding. It looks like this. No real idea how this is supposed to work. I guess the nodes are bounty replacements as you work toward an…engram.

– They are launching Fireteam Finder in season 23. In Final Shape they are making big changes to the “progression system” to help more friends play together. More at the showcase. Not sure if maybe this is the leveling changes?
