National’s health spokesperson Shane Reti says the Māori Health Authority, Te Aka Whai Ora, is too Wellington-centred, and he’s keen to move responsibility for Māori health outcomes closer to hapu and home.
He intends to reform the system based on principles of devolving, decentralising, and regionalising.
“So its the general theme of distributing decision making and distributing funding closer to the home and the hapu. There are parts of the existing system that may well be a framework we can use. A larger part of this we will know more of if and when we are privileged to be in the government side and can look at some of the detail that has been more obscured to us in Opposition,” he says.
Dr Reti says he’s ready to hit the ground running.
