Reports of “Bluey’s” demise are a bit premature.
Rumors that the children’s animated series is ending have parents across the globe freaking out — and were fueled by the show’s supersized 28-minute Season 3 finale, “The Sign,” which could have been interpreted as closing a chapter in the life of the little Blue Heeler dog and her family.
After all, the usual “Bluey” episode runs seven to nine minutes.
But “Bluey” producer Sam Moor opened up about the speculation with BBC Radio Four.
“It is the question on everybody’s lips. No, it is not the end for for ‘Bluey,’” he said, according to Parents. “I’m sure we have many more surprises in store for you.”
And the show’s executive producer, Daley Pearson, told the Australian Broadcasting Corporation that the season finale was a “trial run” to see if viewers liked the longer length.
The “Today” show reported that a show spokesperson “double-confirmed” to the Australian Broadcasting Company that they have “no plans to end the show.”
The Australian series, created by Joe Brumm and based on his family’s own experiences, premiered in 2018 and runs on Disney Channel, Disney Junior and Disney+.
It centers around Bluey, her younger sibling Bingo and her parents, Chilli and Bandit, who sometimes argue (it’s always resolved, of course, in a nuanced way).
The series’ mandate is to teach parents how to play with their children based on everday events, and it’s been lauded for its creativity and ingenuity toward those goals.
There are no car chases or villains and some episodes occur in a single setting.
Each episode also promotes creativity and imagination as well as lessons on teamwork, communication and the importance of family, according to Parents.
The series has attracted A-list vocal talent including Natalie Portman, Lin-Manuel Miranda, Rose Byrne, Joel Edgerton and Eva Mendes, and the show has spawned a cottage merchandising industry including books, bedding and plush toys.
So, why, then, all the hysteria over the show possibly ending?
In the episode, Bluey tells her teacher, Calypso, about her concerns that her family might be moving. (The title of the episode refers to the “For Sale” sign in front of the Heeler home.)
Calypso then reads the class a story about a farmer who experiences a lot of ups and downs in life. And, after each travail, people ask the farmer, “Is this a good thing or a bad thing?”
And the farmer replies, “We’ll see.”
“Is that it? What happens next?” Bluey’s classmates ask — while Bluey wants to know if “We’ll see” is a happy or a sad ending.
Responds her teacher Calypso: “Everything will work out the way it’s supposed to, Bluey” — and it’s those words that have thrown the show’s viewers into a tizzy.
Bluey, Bingo, Bandit, Chilli and the extended Heeler family also celebrated the wedding of Bandit’s brother Radley to Frisky during the April 14 episode.
In a group of parent reactions gathered by Forbes, a mom named Kelly Crawford said the special episode was the first piece of media to make her cry, according to People.
“My daughter actually admitted that it made her cry and I’ve never known her to get emotional at films or TV,” Crawford said. “She watched it at 8 a.m. and then forced me and her dad to watch it too because she was bursting to talk about it with someone.”
Another “Bluey” fan named Sam Gavin wrote on X that “it wouldn’t be an exaggeration to say “Bluey’s” ‘The Sign’ absolutely f–ked me up.”
“My therapist isn’t gonna know what hit her,” he continued. “Sensational television. No I’m not joking. Bandit & Chilli are parenting goals. I love these characters so much. F–k, man…”
The website Scary Mommy interviewed the actors who play Chilli and Bandit, Melanie Zanetti and Dave McCormack, about the future of the series.
“For all we know, it is just a season finale. No one tells us anything, but that’s what we’ve been told so far,” Zanetti said.
“It’s just the season finale … we didn’t even know how the second half of ‘The Sign’ was going to end.”
According to Parents, the writers of “Bluey” were always intending on taking a break after Season 3.
It’s also not the first time that “Bluey” was rumored to be ending. In 2022, the show’s creators took to social media to ensure fans that if there was something they need to know, they would hear it from them first “for real life.”
